Abstract: There are language limitations that can prevent certain concepts from being part of a culture. In other words, there is an intricate relationship between culture and language that cannot be denied in any context including science education at primary school level. The purpose of this study is to identify and offer solutions to the main challenges that are experienced by pre-service teachers in using isiXhosa as a medium of instruction in teaching scientific subjects such as Biology, Geography and Life Orientation. The theoretical frameworks used in this study drew from the theory of cognitive dissonance and cultural linguistics. A purposive sample of thirteen pre-service teachers who were majoring in these subjects was used. Data was collected during teaching practice, using classroom observations and one-on-one interviews, and it was inductively analysed into four themes reflecting cultural experiences that do not translate directly between cultures, use of “taboo words”, dialects and “ukuhlonipha” a form of respect for elders, married women and initiates in isiXhosa.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to find out the extent of integration of computer technology into teaching and learning Biology in secondary schools of Rachuonyo South Sub-County, Kenya. The target population consisted of students and biology teachers in the Sub-County. Data was collected by use of questionnaires and an observation check list. From the study, most schools had few computers; teachers had inadequate training on use of computer applications; most teachers did not use computer technology for personal growth and instructional purposes. Inadequate number of computers in the sampled schools was the major challenge facing the integration of computer technology into the instruction process. The study recommends increased accessibility of computers, adequate training on use of computer technology and development of a policy framework to guide on the path to effective computer integration into instruction process.

Abstract: Aeronautic Industry has a critical responsibility in facilitating European economic growth and social inclusion providing revenues to otherwise isolated regions and allowing people to enlarge their horizons. According to the EU, currently aeronautics and air transport are key drivers of European cohesion and competitiveness, representing 220 billions of Euros and providing 4,5 million of jobs in Europe, a figure that should double by 2020. Future developments in the sector, together with greater intra-European mobility of workers and population aging brings a greater need for new skills in the work force together with an urgency for a larger number of professionals. Therefore, to achieve the desirable sustained growth the EU needs to invest in high quality VET (Vocational Education and Training) in order to be able to supply the AI (Aeronautic Industry) with qualified workers. VET stands for education and training which aims to equip people with knowledge, know-how, skills and/or competences required in particular occupations or more broadly on the labour market. This paper presents the initial results of an "initiative" supported by the European Commission called AIRVET. Its main objective is to design, develop, evaluate and disseminate adapted/new AI curricula and VET courses in the specific fields of Maintenance and Information and Communications Technologies (ICT). The methodology followed included an analysis of a desk study, questionnaires completed by over five hundred people, focus group meetings held in four countries and individual interviews performed in the six partner countries. The project triangulates the results to establish clear areas that would benefit from the development of vocational training. Three subject areas were identified to be explored in terms of developing/adapting training curricula and developing multimedia training materials: maintenance, ground operations and human factors.

Abstract: An essential point of the learning and teaching environment today, is the need to pioneer a new approaches which go beyond some "standard" theorizations of pedagogy. We know by experiences that the most successful solutions should not only engage the students and the teachers but some aspect of those approaches should build on the transformative potential of a digital age, as well as emerging insights into human behavior and the human brain. We must seek to set a standard for innovation in pedagogy and commit to its advance. In this paper we review some existing approaches to learning and we describe a new scientific pragmatic approach. This approach based on the real daily practice of scientific researchers (in Mathematics and Physics and not just a theoretical recipe) gives a new insights to learning methods and promotes the creative side of learning.

Abstract: This study investigated the student’s awareness on environmental issues and problems and their behaviors towards the environment in different public and private universities in Bangladesh. In this regards data has been collected from the students of two public universities and two private universities. A sample of 400 students (60% male and 40% female) was drawn from these four Universities taking 100 students from each university and equally sharing the number between two categories like environmental background and non-environmental background. The analysis revealed that according to the perception of the surveyed students global warming (86.5%) and depletion of natural resources (71.2%) were two most important environmental problems in the world whereas in Bangladesh, arsenic contamination in ground water (93.2%) and natural resources depletion (71.2%) have found as major environmental problems. The study concluded that peoples’ education on environment (98%) is a most convenient solution for mitigating the problems and the printing & electronic media (78.8%) are most helpful means to bring awareness among people.

Abstract: This study aimed to describe and analyze the contents evident in the selected flyers of condominium projects. This study used the descriptive type of research method as it focused on the mandatory contents present in the selected thirty flyers of condominium projects in Cebu. Results revealed that the exact location of the project including the street, name of the owner or developer and license to sell or amended license to sell number are the mandatory contents evident in the flyers. Moreover, the newly-discovered contents include the landmarks, location & distance in kilometers/meters as well as the website of the developers. This study provides implications to the successful implementation of the guidelines set by the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board.

Abstract: While much research has been done on gangs in general, little research exists that has examined the predictors of attitudes toward gangs held by young adult women in micropolitan communities. The researchers conducted a predictive correlational research study to determine the significant predictors of attitudes toward gangs held by small-metropolitan community young adults between the ages of eighteen and 25. Through survey sampling, the researchers found that gender was a significant predictor of attitudes toward gangs within this sample population, and race was also a significant predictor of attitudes. Recommendations for gang prevention and reduction measures are suggested along with recommendations for future research examining attitudes toward gangs.

Abstract: In Mauritius, it was found that students find it hard to learn the foreign language in Marathi which is an optional language. The main reasons were that these students do not have outside exposure to the language after school classes; they learn and practice the language only in their classroom. Moreover, since the subject is being taught though the traditional teaching method, students were not motivated. The researchers have observed that many students failed in this subject. Thus for this research project, NVU Composer freeware was used to develop the learning content on the topic 'weather' in Marathi Language for students in their fourth year of study at primary school (8 to 9 years old). The implementation of the learning tool in Marathi was carried out in a class comprises of 18 students. The ARCS model of motivational design was used to design the learning lesson using NVU Composer. For evaluation purposes, i-Spring Quiz Maker was used in the form of multiple choices questions and true and false questions. Many activities were included in the learning lesson such as recorded audio, viewing videos, reading activities, and designing covers for a story in Marathi Language and completing a story in writing sentences in Marathi. The assessments would cater for the three types of learners namely Kinesthetic, Visual and Auditory learners. The results from the assessments showed a slight improvement and students showed more interest in the subject.

Abstract: Over the past decade, systemic functional linguistics and Legitimation Code Theory (LCT) has been cooperating to offer insight into education, especially knowledge building. In the special issue of Linguistics and Education in 2013, Karl Maton highlights the significance of semantic waves in knowledge building. These semantic waves involve recurrent movements in the semantic gravity and semantic density. Based on this theory, considering the technicality and abstractness of high stake reading and writing expected from students, the functional linguist J. R. Martin put forward the practical concepts of power trio, including power words, power grammar and power composition as tools for teachers to use for purposes of knowledge building from the perspective of lexicon, clause and discourse. In this paper, specific attention is first paid to introduce the development of LCT to power trio. Finally, the paper will move on to raise important issues regarding the problems lies in the theories.
